ORAL HISTORY CATALOG The California Social Welfare Archives' (CSWA) Oral History Collection contains audio and video recordings of interviews documenting the history and lessons of influential social workers and social welfare programs. Examples of interviewees include Carmelita White, the first African-American graduate of the USC School of Social Work (as of 2016 the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work) in 1932; George Nickel, one of the leaders in the advancement of social welfare in California, from his entrance into the profession during the Great Depression until his death (1990); and Charles Schottland, Social Security Commissioner during the Eisenhower administration and head of the U.S. Children's Bureau To consult the collection on-site, please make an appointment by e-mail to specol@usc.edu or by phone, 213-740-5900.
