Overview of Services

Library accounts for current USC students include the following services:
 

  • Facility access for all USC Libraries locations
  • Borrowing of up to 200 standard circulating material items at a time
  • Remote and on-site access to USC subscriptions of online journals, books and databases (Access to electronic databases, electronic journals, electronic books, and other research websites is for the exclusive use of all current USC students, faculty—including visiting and part-time—and staff.  Electronic resources are governed by license agreements, and the terms of use are set by the publishers and vendors from which they are subscribed.)
  • Use of library information kiosk computers
  • Access to library computer labs with productivity software
  • Use of library microform readers, scanners, and photocopiers
  • Paging materials from Grand Library
  • Recalling materials checked out by other users
  • In-person reference assistance
  • 24/7 Online Chat and Email Reference
  • Interlibrary loan
  • Access to electronic and hard-copy course reserves
  • Room reservations for collaborative work rooms, conference rooms, learning rooms, and auditoria
  • Reading room access for rare books and archival materials
  • Admission to library-hosted events and exhibitions

Library accounts for current USC faculty and Professors Emeritus include the following services:

Access to electronic databases, electronic journals, electronic books, and other subscription research websites is for the exclusive use of all current USC students, faculty—including visiting and part-time—and staff. Electronic resources are governed by license agreements, and the terms of use are set by the publishers and vendors from which they are subscribed.

    Retired faculty who hold the title Professor Emeritus also may access electronic resources remotely. Please note that membership in the Emeriti Center does not automatically allow remote electronic access to subscription resources. Such access is available only to those retired faculty with the Professor Emeritus designation.

  • Remote access to the ProQuest Research Library is available to members of the USC Alumni Association
  • Use of library information kiosk computers to connect to subscription and other resources. Access can be requested at any Reference or Circulation desk.
    • (Computer labs, including those in Leavey, not included)
  • Use of library microform readers, scanners, and photocopiers
  • Paging of materials from Grand Library
  • Recalling materials checked out by other users
  • In-person reference assistance
  • Reading room access for rare books and archival materials

Library Privileges for USC Retired Faculty and Staff

Overview of Services

Retired USC faculty and staff who are Gold Card holders are entitled to the library privileges listed below. Please note that membership in the Emeriti Center does not automatically allow remote electronic access to subscription library resources. Due to licensing restrictions, such access is available only to those retired faculty with the Professor Emeritus designation. Please see the Faculty and Professors Emeritus tab for details.

Overview of Services

Library accounts for current Friends of the Library, sponsored guests, visiting scholars, summer program participants, individual or corporate fee borrowers, and approved members of affiliated institutions include the following services based on availability:
 

  • Facility access for all USC Libraries locations
  • Borrowing of standard circulating material, up to 20 items at a time (5 for high school students, 125 for corporate fee borrowers, 200 for affiliated faculty and graduate students)
  • On-site access to USC subscriptions of online journals, books and databases (Remote access to USC Libraries' other electronic databases, electronic journals, electronic books, and other research websites is for the exclusive use of all current USC students, faculty (including visiting and part-time) €”and staff.  Electronic resources are governed by license agreements, and the terms of use are set by the publishers and vendors from which they are subscribed.) 
  • Use of library information guest computers (computer labs not included). Access can be requested at the Circulation desks in the Architecture and Fine Arts, Science and Engineering and Doheny Memorial Libraries only
  • Use of library microform readers, scanners, and photocopiers
  • Paging of materials from Grand Library
  • In-person reference assistance
  • Reading room access for rare books and archival materials
  • Special Collections – The USC Libraries' Special Collections is a non-circulating research library open to the general public. Please consult these guidelines for first-time visitors.
  • Borrowing Privileges for Individual & Corporate Fee Borrowers – Individual fee-based privileges are available for Los Angeles-area residents at the rate of $125.00 for 6 months. Corporate privileges are available to Los Angeles-area businesses for $300.00 for 6 months. The USC Libraries reserve the right to determine whether applicants qualify for individual or corporate privileges. Individuals must apply for borrowing privileges in person at Doheny.
  • Borrowing Privileges for iVip Scholars – Visiting scholars, VIP guests, and summer program participants must be sponsored by an academic or administrative department to obtain library privileges. Upon a recommendation of a sponsoring school’s Dean (or their designate), a visiting scholar’s (a guest’s or program participant’s) information is entered into the iVIP system.   • Borrowing Privileges for local institutions – Libraries provide borrowing privileges to faculty, students, and researchers from the following institutions: Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and American Film Institute. We also work with USC’s Neighborhood Academic Initiative to provide borrowing privileges to local high school and college students through selected programs.
  • Research Guides – These are created by librarians and point to subscription-based and freely accessible resources on particular subjects and disciplines.
