Lauryn Salazar

Voices in East Asian Studies and Music, under the auspices of the Department of History at USC, is proud to host Lauryn Salazar, PhD, the leading expert on mariachi music and the foremost authority on the academic mariachi movement throughout Mexico and the United States. A member of the two-time Grammy award-winning “Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea,” a cultural adviser for Disney Pixar, and most recently a consultant with the United States Postal Service to design a new line of mariachi-themed stamps, Dr. Salazar will deliver a public lecture on the presence of mariachi in Japan. In this presentation, Dr. Salazar will delve into the history and significance of Mariachi Samurai among other groups, examining how it represents the evolving landscape of cultural identity in our globalized world. From the vibrant music of Mexico to the disciplined ethos of Japan, Dr. Salazar will unravel the threads that weave these cultures together in a highly localized performance space. A lively discussion about the fusion of global culture and identity that invites us to question, celebrate, and embrace the diversity of our world.

This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Latinx and Latin American Studies.
