Several entertainment news publications highlighted the USC Libraries' announcement on January 17 of the finalists for the 36th-annual Scripter Awards.
Variety's Clayton Davis noted that Origin was a "surprise entry" in the film category, as was Winning Time in the episodic series category. Davis also described the Scripter Award as "a strong bellwether for the Oscars’ best adapted screenplay category"—a point that The Wrap's Steve Pond elaborated on:
Over the first 35 years of the Scripter Awards, about 60% of its finalists have gone on to receive Oscar nominations in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. In that time, 15 Scripter winners have also won the Oscar. More than half of those wins came in an eight-year streak between 2010 and 2017.
