The African Ceremonies Collection is a comprehensive selection of images covering more than 30 years of fieldwork carried out by U.S.-born Carol Beckwith and Australian Angela Fisher, two photographers who have dedicated their lives to recording traditional cultures throughout Africa. Their work has taken them to some of the most remote corners of the continent where they won the trust and support of people, thus gaining them access to sacred ceremonies and traditions little known to the outside world. The result is an unrivalled, joyful, and intimate photographic record of African traditional life.

In June 2007, Ireen Mudeka conducted oral research for the Aluka oral history project in the town of Rugare, one of the most interesting ‘townships’ in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. Generations of Mozambicans, who constitute the central participants in this oral interview project, have lived in the townships of Harare, including Rugare, since the inception of colonialism. Most significantly, the interviews with them shed light on various strands of social history and cultural aspects as well as liberation war issues, all of which are at the core of the Aluka project.

South Africa under apartheid was highly bureaucratic and commissions of inquiry were often instituted either to justify actions taken against opponents of apartheid or to provide the government with justification for acting against its opponents. Commissions of inquiry thus constitute an important piece of the history of the struggle for freedom. Although the reports of the commissions are often readily available, the minutes of evidence, which contain testimony from both sides of the struggle, were usually not published and copies of them are extremely rare. However, Aluka is now able to present some of this evidence in digital form.

Allard K. Lowenstein (1929–1980), a charismatic political figure, rose to fame as president of the U.S. National Student Association (NSA) in 1950. In the early 1960s, Lowenstein was a key figure in the civil rights movement. He left a voluminous collection of papers, now housed at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, from which these documents have been selected. They concern his involvement in Southern African affairs from the late 1950s.
