James Cameron on Learning Visual Effects at USC's Cinematic Arts Library

In a recent Popular Mechanics interview, Cameron talked about the innovative special effects for his upcoming movie Avatar. After writing the first treatment in 1995, Cameron waited nearly fifteen years for visual effects technology to catch up with his vision. During the interview, he talks about learning visual effects by studying USC dissertations on optical printing and the sensitometry of film stocks. “This is not bull,” he said. “I gave myself a great course on film FX for the cost of the copying.”
