Hollywood Fan Magazine Exhibition Opening April 29

Don't miss Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine: A History of Star Makers, Fabricators, and Gossip Mongers from April 29 to July 30, 2010, in Doheny Library’s David L. Wolper Center. On display will be hundreds of fan magazines and memorabilia dating back to the early years of Hollywood, when movie buffs read Movie Picture Classic, Photoplay, Screenland, and other publications for the latest celebrity news and gossip.

Many of the items on display come from the personal collection of author Anthony Slide whose newly published book Inside the Hollywood Fan Magazine: A History of Star Makers, Fabricators, and Gossip Mongers was the inspiration behind the exhibition. The author of more than 70 books on popular entertainment, associate archivist for the American Film Institute, and resident film historian of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be at the opening reception to discuss the impact fan magazines had on the motion picture industry and to autograph copies of his latest book.

Established in 1939, USC’s Cinematic Arts Library is the only academic library in the U.S. devoted entirely to the study of the moving image. Researchers from around the world consult more than 400 specialized research collections at the library documenting the history of television and film production. Slide extensively utilized USC’s McCormick collection in preparation for his book.

The opening reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, in USC’s David L. Wolper Center on the University of Southern California campus. USC instructor and film critic Leonard Maltin will share opening remarks. The exhibition will be open Monday through Friday and is free to the public.
