EBSCO Database Enhancements

Subject Indexing Mapping and New Keyword Terms field

In order to provide continuity with the subject indexing that will be applied to all publications processed by EBSCO from 2009 forward, NISC’s controlled vocabulary (subject indexing) has been mapped to EBSCO’s. Where we have found an equivalent subject term, the EP subject term is retained in the subject heading fields visible in citation records.

Where the NISC subject term is more specific than the EP term or a precise correlation was not possible, mapping may have occurred to the closest equivalent term, with the original term loaded into the keyword field. As a general example: a record with “Consumer participation” now has “Consumer activism” as a subject term, and “Consumer participation” loaded as a keyword.

Where a NISC subject heading hasn’t been mapped to an EP equivalent at all, the original term has been loaded into a new field called “Keywords.”  This field is visible in the citation.

In the Index Browse the user may search both Keywords and Author Supplied Keywords under the collective label “Keyword Terms,”  analogous to “Subject Terms,” which allows the user to search all of the subject indexing, whether Geographics, People or Company Entity, etc.

On the Advanced, Guided Style Search Screen, the Keyword Terms field is available to search using the field code:  KA.

Subject Indexing Display

Subject Indexing is now available as displayed, broken out by type. Company Entity, People, Reviews & Products have been added to the previously-available Subjects, and Geographical Terms.

We have also begun editing the representation of publication names. More editing will follow in 2009. Thus far, several hundred titles have been checked for spelling and variations have been standardized into a consistent format.
