Helen Hunt Jackson was a poet and writer, as well as an activist for improved conditions for Native Americans by the United States government. "Ramona", published in 1884, dramatized the government's mistreatment of Native Americans in Southern California after the Mexican-American War. It became immensely popular, and was reprinted approximately 300 times. Its popularity sparked a tourism boom in Southern California, with visitors wanting to see the locations Jackson included in the novel.

Front and back covers are detached; spine lacking; former repair needs to be removed and signatures may need resewing. Requires a custom box for long term preservation.
