Chronica

Description:

The Chronica (Chronicles), by Marianus Scotus (Latin for Marian the Scot), is purported to be a universal history from the creation of the world up to 1082. It employed an unusual dual numbering system based on the mistaken belief that Dionysius Exiguus, the 6th century Scythian monk who invented the Anno Domini era, was off by 22 years. The chronicle became very popular in Europe during the Middle Ages. Its first printing, of which USC's copy is an example, did not occur until 1559; it existed prior to this date only in manuscript form.
