Statement on Descriptive Language

The USC Libraries acknowledge that some of our descriptive language may be inaccurate, offensive, or outdated. We commit to evaluating those deficiencies in our descriptions and working to improve them. We also recognize that this will be an ongoing project as we identify problematic language throughout the Libraries’ resource descriptions.

We have four objectives in this ongoing project:

  1. Identify problematic language where it exists in our metadata and descriptions;
  2. Remediate the language where appropriate and highlight, explain, or contextualize it otherwise;
  3. Ensure that all holdings and items within the USC Libraries are described to reflect and amplify diverse viewpoints; and
  4. Maintain language within areas where the USC Libraries use descriptive language that is accurate and adheres to the University’s unifying values.

If you encounter language in USC catalog records, digitized collections, finding aids, exhibitions, or elsewhere that you find problematic, or if you have questions about this statement or about our work, please contact us.
