Overview

Course Reserves (aka ARES - see below*) manages course reserves including electronic reserves and physical reserve requests. Maintained and operated by the Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery (IDD) department, the Course Reserves service is an additional resource that can be added to other university course management systems such as Brightspace as it is supported by USC Libraries staff to manage physical and electronic reserve requests obtainable and available from the libraries' collections, databases, and other resources.

*Please note that Course Reserves was often referred to as "ARES", which is Automated Reserves System, the management system we use for this service.  Course Reserves and ARES are one and the same.

Course Reserves serves as a single point access for instructors and students to access course content which can include articles from journals or other publications, book chapters, streaming content, weblinks, e-books, and physical materials. Instructors are able to:

  • Create a course to organize their physical and electronic reserves access for students.
  • Submit physical reserve requests (book, personal book copies, DVDs, etc.) for their course(s).
  • Submit electronic reserve requests for articles, book chapters, and other materials from library resources so long as copyright guidelines are followed.
  • Upload their own or existing articles, book chapters, and other documents for their course(s).  Please note that any upload, book chapters in particular, must have a copy of the title and copyright pages attached.
  • Clone course and its content from a previous semester or year and re-post reserve items without having to resubmit individual requests the following semester
  • Link to USC Libraries e-resources

As outlined above, Course Reserves manages multiple requests for reserves per class such as physical books and electronic reserves.
