USC Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study: Are you a Polymath?

Register here

This session introduces the USC SIDNEY HARMAN ACADEMY FOR POLYMATHIC STUDY, a place where students and faculty, through conversation and practice, learn to integrate multiple fields of learning. The Academy’s series of programs, based in Doheny and Leavey Libraries, are built upon disciplined discussion of four polymathic quadrants as well as unique symposia on specialized polymathic topics. The Academy’s approach presumes that both faculty and students are in the process of acquiring knowledge in a given field and are sensitive to the interconnectedness of that field with other disciplines, methodologies, and modes of presentation.

The HARMAN ACADEMY-SIDNEY CENTER, located on the second floor of Doheny Memorial Library, offers a series of conversational encounters intended to intensify polymathic awareness. THE QUADRANT SERIES is open to all students and explores the core structure of the Academy—the four quadrants—from a philosophical, historical, and practical point of view. The WORKSHOPS, PANELS, and SPECIAL EVENTS SERIES feature collaborative exchanges with institutes and scholars from USC and around the globe. The popular POLYMATHIC PIZZA SERIES investigates what it means to live a polymathic life.

The HARMAN ACADEMY-AHMANSON LAB, located on the third floor of Leavey Library, is a place to realize these goals through tinkering and tactile engagement. Polymathy values different ways of learning, knowing, and being, ranging from the written word to various modes of embodiment and creative practice. The Ahmanson Lab extends the Harman Academy’s focus on integrative learning to the tactile and the haptic, offering students a space for experimentation, play, and creative practice. Through workshops on design, digital authoring, and other creative endeavors, we explore the value of making to polymathic inquiry. A roster of visiting artists, designers, and makers join us to expand our thinking about the potentials of polymathic practice.

The Harman Academy for Polymathic Study is neither club nor student org; rather it is an institute, unique to USC, that offers students who "think outside the box" (or polymathically) to join a like-minded community of faculty and peers to explore, problem solve, and innovate. Join us and discover if you are indeed, a polymath!

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Fall Recognition Ceremony (Invitation Only)

For more information, please visit The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Celebrate USC's most accomplished sophomores and juniors for their academic excellence during the previous year. Founded in 1897, the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest at USC and draws members from all study disciplines. With the USC Libraries, the USC Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi provides opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty members to engage in research and creative pursuits, to share their experiences, and to earn recognition for their accomplishments within a supportive academic community. At the Fall Recognition Ceremony, Phi Kappa Phi recognizes sophomores on track for full membership, and initiates juniors into full membership.
