Join us in celebrating Japanese Girls' Day, or Hinamatsuri! Come see a traditional tiered doll display (hinadan) and learn to create your own dolls and hanging decorations inspired by the festival.

The day will include Japanese tea ceremony demonstrations, Student Educator led tours and storytime for kids.

Enjoy free admission all day!

*About the Tea Ceremony Demonstration:

Please join members of the Urasenke School of Tea for a demonstration of the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) followed by a matcha whisking workshop. All participants will have the chance to make and drink a bowl of tea, and learn about the rich cultural tradition of chanoyu. Limited to 15 participants per session, first-come-first-serve signup. 

About the Instructors:

Rebecca Corbett is a Japanese Studies Librarian at the University of Southern California where she is also a Faculty Advisor to the USC Chanoyu Tea Club. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Sydney, was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, and has been a student of the Urasenke School of Tea for 20 years. Her book Cultivating Femininity: Women and Tea Culture in Edo and Meiji Japan (University of Hawai’i Press, 2018) analyses privately circulated and commercially published texts to show how the Japanese tea ceremony was practiced by women from the eighteenth through early twentieth centuries.

Keiko Nakada is a USC alumnus and Urasenke Chado Certified Instructor with over 46 years of study in the Urasenke tradition. She is also a graduate of the Kenkyuka course at Konnichian, Kyoto, the headquarters of the Urasenke School of Tea. She teaches regular tea classes in Pasadena and runs the public tea program at the Shosei’an Teahouse in Glendale.
