This event, held in conjunction with the release of Redemptive Dreams: Engaging Kevin Starr’s California, features contributors to the book as well as academics whose careers have benefited greatly both from Starr’s research and generous mentorship. Kevin Starr (1940–2017) is rightly regarded as the dean of California historians. A 4th-generation Californian, the longtime state librarian and USC professor began publishing in 1973 a landmark series of volumes on the history of the Golden State. He spent the next forty years charting into the 21st century the growth and maturity of his beloved home. Among the many honors Starr received were the National Humanities Medal from President Bush and induction into the California Hall of Fame by Governor Schwarzenegger. Elon Musk, known for his capricious management style, unilaterally alters X’s policies almost weekly, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such concentrated authority. The recent drama at OpenAI, whereby CEO Sam Altman was abruptly dismissed by the board only to be hastily reinstated with board members resigning, underscores the volatile and often unregulated governance within major tech companies. These events reflect a growing concern about the unchecked power of tech leaders, raising questions about accountability and the broader impact of their decisions on society and technology's ethical landscape.

Topics for discussion during this conversation might include: In light of the OpenAI incident involving Sam Altman, what does the lack of consistent and transparent leadership in major tech firms reveal about the ethical and operational challenges facing the tech industry today? How does the concentration of power in the hands of individual technology CEOs impact the democratic nature of technology governance and the representation of diverse user interests? 03:00 pm 04:00 pm America/Los_Angeles public
