Hamlin Garland's name written on a school slate carved with his initials.

The Hamlin Garland papers contain manuscripts, literary notebooks, photographs, and memorabilia from the American author (1860 - 1940) who is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir A Daughter of the Middle Border. A highlight of the collection is the nearly 10,000 letters from notable correspondents such as Walt Whitman, Joseph Conrad, Thomas Hardy, and Willa Cather, among others. This correspondence has been digitized and is available online through the USC Digital Library
