Author: Karpeles, Gustav, 1848-1909. Publication Year: 1886 Publication Location: Berlin, R. Oppenheim
Description:

Gustav Karpeles devoted himself to research in German and Jewish literature. Karpeles was the founder of the weekly Juedische Presse, and over the course of his career, was the editor of this journal, as well as of a number of literary journals in Germany. Karpeles published five books on Heinrich Heine, and four editions of his work. His most important contribution to Jewish scholarship was the two-volume Geschichte der juedischen Literatur (1886, 1920–23; partial tr. History of Jewish Literature, n.d.). Karpeles was not an original or profound scholar, but he did much to popularize Jewish literature and history.
