Forbidden Pages: Past and Present Exhibition
Heads of state, religious leaders, local governments, school administrators—and even ordinary people—have tried to suppress books that challenged their authority or beliefs, broke with social conventions, or shared uncomfortable ideas. These items on display from the USC Libraries’ collections have survived multiple attempts at censorship over the years. Some are well-known targets of book bans and challenges—such as The Satanic Verses, Lolita, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn—while others may be surprising, including cherished books by Judy Blume, John Milton, Toni Morrison, and Upton Sinclair. Collectively, these banned or challenged books
offer a record of ideas that societies—for one reason or another—have found disquieting. Fulfilling the mission of libraries to provide access to the full record of human knowledge, we present them to you for your consideration.
In conjunction with this exhibit, the USC Libraries are providing access to the university community to stream The Librarians, an Emmy Award-nominated documentary that follows librarians across the country dealing with a wave of book bans as they become unexpected defenders of the First Amendment.
Presented in partnership with the USC Open Dialogue Project, the exhibition features books, periodicals, photographs, and other materials from the USC Libraries’ collections that tell the story of censorship and resistance over the centuries. See it in the first-floor foyer of Doheny Memorial Library.

AI, Copyright, and Libraries: Guidelines for Faculty, Students, and Researchers
AI tools offer faculty, students, and researchers an alluring way to locate and synthesize library-licensed materials, but these efficiency gains may not always comply with copyright law, license terms, or research ethics. This session reviews responsible uses of AI with licensed content in the USC Libraries collections. Participants will examine emerging court rulings on copyright and large language models, along with database vendor license requirements. USC librarians Benjamin Hall and Bridgid Fennell will also cover best practices for sharing library resources in Brightspace and introduce AI features in several library databases.
The workshop is presented as part of the USC Center for Excellence in Teaching's fall series.
